Who created Pilates?

Joseph Pilates, a German-born physical education enthusiast, created Pilates while he was imprisoned off the coast of England during World War I. Along with other "physical culturists," he led daily exercise routines for inmates. After immigrating to the U.S. in the 1920s, Pilates refined his methods with the help of his partner, Clara Zeuner. His New York City studio soon became a popular spot for dancers seeking ways to recover from injuries.
